Rudi Klein's “Junkyard” collection, Los Angeles, California, USA

The collection was amassed by German immigrant Rudi Klein, who started a scrapyard business in South Central Los Angeles in 1967.

The collection includes standout models like the Lamborghini Miura, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, and Mercedes-Benz 500K, and in many cases there are multiple examples.

The collection also includes a 1939 Horch 855 Special Roadster allegedly owned by Eva Braun, plus a 1967 Iso Grifo A3/L Spider Prototype by Bertone, and a smattering of Porsche 356es.

A bit of a gearhead himself, Klein had an eye for rare autos, primarily those from his homeland. He recognized that spare parts would be hard to come by so he started amassing the cars, typically purchasing them as wrecks. As a result, most of the cars in the collection will need a lot of work to get them back into road-worthy condition.

NSU ro80 2 Porte + 2, 1971, by Pininfarina. A rotary-engined concept designed by Paulo Martin is to be offered at auction in California. The design study was based on NSU's executive class saloon and was displayed by Pininfarina at the 1971 Turin and 1972 Brussels Motor Shows. Features include rear-hinged doors and a removable roof panel that stores in the luggage compartment. It has been owned by an American collected since 1995 but has been on show at Audi's museum in Ingolstadt. It will be offered without reserve as part of The Rudi Klein Collection auction by RM Sotheby's.

A bit of History of the Der Jellicle Nachten

The building came into being as a Frei Deutsch Jugend (FDJ) sanctioned disco hall in the early 1960s to house teenage dances and dates, being that for two decades until 1989, when a young West Berliner named Brad/Bella Schlesinger , better known as Bombalurina, teamed up with David “Deuteronomy” Muller and Dieter “Munkustrap” Schroeder (he insists no relation) to buy the whole building for 750 West German Deutschmarks and renames it Der Jellicle Nachten, after a mishearing of a playful name Munkustrap called a young twink at a bar

A lot of the early clientele were either hyper political activists or West German elder gays travelling east, and the first Jellicle Ball was effectively the last Potsdam FDJ meetup before the last head Lothar “Asparagus” Klein broke the group up and joined the club’s management instead

During the Rostock riots, co-owner Bombalurina was severely beaten up and hurt by Neonazi thugs and football hooligans. Far from breaking her, it stirred her to double down on club activities and political activism, giving St Pauli FC fans heavy discounts, ingratiating herself with Morgan “Cat Morgan” Trautmann and Gretel “Griddlebone” Kahn, owners of the biggest St Pauli fan group and active PDS members, as well as lesbians , eventually going on to raise two boys and one girl (all three later came out as transgender), one of them an intersex, ten year old runaway from the fascist gangs they fought, Rudi/Rhonda “Rumpleteazer” Kiesenger

Bombalurina also got a family in 1996, getting into a civil union with Mary “Demeter”Schoenberg and adopting Eva/Rose “Jemima/Sillabub” Schoenberg, the only one to get two nicknames and the one to stir Bombalurina to start youth events in the daytime for queer kids, where Jemibub found Emma “Electra” Bartels, a queer child of a Dutch family

In 1999 the club celebrated its 10th anniversary, months before Jemima’s 10th birthday in 2000, a new dawn perhaps? The club also had Euros coverage in 2000, not that it really mattered because in Electra’s words “Germany blew harder than a tuba” that year. Rumpleteazer turned 18, initially rejected from full membership for her past, but after an appeal in 1999 where Rumpleteazer flat came out to the entire management team, she was accepted in the knowledge that she changed as a person

In 2005 Jemima/Sillabub turned 15 and after an attack at the under 18 club, Jemima and Electra were given full adult membership and full access to adult support systems where the full extent of Macavity’s crimes and abuse were discovered and made public in 2006 with Jemima’s permission

In 2008 all the members of the youth club have come of legal drinking age (in Germany it’s 16, but I’m saying they’re all 18 by this stage to be safe), the youngest being Percy “Pouncival”Mittelstadt, born on the last day of the entire year

The events of these stories will usually be 2010 onwards, but older settings will be labelled

Martina (Leni Deschner) hat es nicht leicht, sie wohnt mit ihrer Mutter und ihrem kleinen Bruder in einer Hochhaussiedlung in Berlin. Die Mutter kann wegen der Schichtarbeit nicht immer auf den kleinen Bruder aufpassen, also übernimmt Martina das. Doch eines Tages ändert sich ihr Leben schlagartig, denn sie hat es geschafft, am begehrten Johann-Sigismund-Gymnasium im Alpenstädtchen Kirchberg aufgenommen zu werden. Doch schon am ersten Tag machen Jo (Lovena Börschmann Ziegler), Boxer Matze (Morten Völlger) und der kleine Uli (Wanja Valentin Kube) klar, wer den Ton angibt. An der Schule ist allgemein bekannt, dass Stadt- und Dorfkinder keinen Kontakt miteinander haben, da eine alte Rivalität herrscht. Die charismatische Ruda (Franka Roche) und ein geheimnisvoller Junge (Trystan Pütter) ziehen Martinas Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Als es eines Tages zu einem Streit zwischen den Gruppen kommt und Ruda involviert ist, kann Martina sich nicht mehr raushalten und greift ein. Ob das die richtige Entscheidung war?

But most often he would call from his place in Kentucky, on a cold, still night, when one could hear the stars breathing. Just a late-night phone call out of a blue, as startling as a canvas by Yves Klein; a blue to get lost in, a blue that might lead anywhere. I’d happily awake, stir up some Nescafé and we’d talk about anything. About the emeralds of Cortez, or the white crosses in Flanders Fields, about our kids, or the history of the Kentucky Derby. But mostly we talked about writers and their books. Latin writers. Rudy Wurlitzer. Nabokov. Bruno Schulz.

“Wereld! Leef verder! Hier is een kind om je voort te duwen.”

Marja Pruis zou in De Balie in Amsterdam een lezing over Ethel Portnoy (1927-2004) geven als onderdeel van de reeks 'Publieke intellectuelen'. Wat zou ik daar graag heen willen! Waar ik eens mijn hand niet voor zou omdraaien, zijn het nu mijn (pijnlijke) voeten en mijn energie die de baas zijn. Gelukkig vond ik de tekst in De Groene Amsterdammer van deze week. Best lang geleden dat ik een van Portnoys boeken had gelezen, of zelfs maar opengeslagen. Hoog tijd.

Het Engels taalgebied mag Sylvia Plath en Ted Hughes als literair wonderkoppel hebben, wij hebben Ethel Portnoy en Rudy Kousbroek (1929-2010). Ik bewonder alle vier. Een geluk dat het huwelijk van ons Nederlandse paar (Ethel is Amerikaanse, maar vestigde zich hier voorgoed) niet zo dramatisch eindigde. Ze scheidden, Kousbroek hertrouwde, Portnoy genoot van haar vrijheid. In mijn boekenkast vullen ze samen aardig wat decimeters. Maar een bekentenis is hier op zijn plaats. Ik hield erg van haar boeken, maar ik voelde soms stiekem ook een zweem van gêne, want was hij niet krachtiger, 'intellectueler', hadden zijn boeken niet meer impact, waren zijn onderwerpen niet belangwekkender? Wie van ver komt (ik dus) en zich de wereld van literatuur en ideeën probeert eigen te maken, is vaak ambitieus op een voor de hand liggende manier: de geest is belangrijker dan het hart. Het zegt natuurlijk ook iets over wie ik was en wie ik wilde zijn. Nu is het een genot om niet langer iemand te willen zijn, maar gewoon iemand te zijn. Portnoy schreef in het Engels en al haar boeken werden vertaald door Kousbroek, hun dochter Hepzibah en anderen. Misschien is dat de reden waarom ze, afgezien van de de Annie Romein-prijs van feministisch tijdschrift Opzij, nooit een literaire prijs kreeg. Kousbroek daarentegen ontving vele prijzen en een eredoctoraat.

Ik sloeg 'Gemengde gevoelens' (1992) open, een kleine verzameling observaties, aantekeningen en aforismen en schoot heel vaak in de lach. Zo goed en zo geestig! Nu bedenk ik dat ik Kousbroek nooit geestig zou noemen. Het is haar precies gevormde luchthartigheid die zo anders uitpakt dan bij haar (ex-)echtgenoot. Voor beide auteurs gold overigens dat geen enkel onderwerp te min was om over te schrijven. Gefascineerd door de twee foto's in De Groene Amsterdammer begon ik in 'Parijse feesten' te lezen, de herinneringen aan haar vroege jaren in Parijs, aan de ontmoeting met een blonde 'knaap' in een houtje-touwtjejas, die tot haar verrassing Hollander was. Daarin vond ik nog andere foto's die net als die van Hughes en Plath een verlangen oproepen naar je eigen mythische vroege volwassenheid – die natuurlijk helemaal niet mythisch was. In 'Gemengde gevoelens' lees ik dat vrouwen niet beter zijn dan mannen. “Ze zijn precies even leugenachtig, lui, machtswellustig en slecht. Maar ik geloof wel dat zij gelijke kansen zouden moeten hebben om op hoge posten blijk te geven van die eigenschappen.”Wat ik ontroerend vond: “Wereld! Leef verder!
